Born in Berlin in 1931, Karl Springer’s artistic journey began with bookbinding before transitioning to window dressing at a prestigious fashion house. In the late 1950s, at 26, he moved to New York and started styling windows for Lord & Taylor. Hoping to further his career, Springer applied his bookbinding skills to creating small decorative pieces, such as jewel boxes, desk accessories, and telephone tables, which he meticulously wrapped in animal skin. His unique craftsmanship soon attracted the attention of luxury buyers, including Bergdorf Goodman and the Duchess of Windsor, who introduced Springer to an exclusive circle of high-end clients. Springer opened his first shop on 1st Avenue in New York and later established a small atelier on East 53rd Street, in the heart of "Boutique Row." His reputation grew as he drew inspiration from diverse styles, including French Art Deco, Bauhaus, ancient Greek motifs, and Chinoiserie. By taking simple, streamlined forms and elevating them with luxurious materials, he crafted timeless and innovative pieces. Springer’s use of exotic materials like lacquered parchment, Lucite, chrome, travertine, and granite set him apart. Still, his bold use of lacquered animal skins—goat, lizard, alligator, shagreen, python, and even frog—became his signature. In 1969, Springer opened his primary showroom on East 61st Street and established workshops across the globe. His pieces were assembled in stages by highly skilled artisans specializing in lacquering, leatherworking, and woodworking. Production eventually expanded to Mexico, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Italy, where his lacquered skins, shagreen, coral, and glass lighting were meticulously crafted. By 1983, Springer’s creations were showcased in Manhattan, Los Angeles, Munich, and Tokyo showrooms. Karl Springer passed away in 1991 at 60, leaving a legacy of craftsmanship that continues to captivate collectors worldwide. Learn more! Visit https://houseofcraven.com/furniture-auctions | |
